Watching our pets move through life is one of the greatest joys of being a pet parent, the long walks, morning zoomies and playful pounces. But just like us, our furry friends’ joints need support to keep them moving comfortably, especially as they age or after an active day. Healthy joints aren’t just about mobility, they’re about keeping the spark and freedom in your pet’s life.

How to choose the right joints supplement for your pet...

Early attention to joint health can make a huge difference in quality of life, helping pets stay active, engaged, and playful for years to come and supplements can be a great way to support your pet’s joints, but with so many options out there, it can feel overwhelming. The key is knowing what to look for and understanding what actually helps keep your furry friend moving comfortably.

What to look for in a joints supplement

Don’t get distracted by the words Max, Plus and Advanced, when it comes to joints supplements it’s important to have a proper look at what’s in it and whether there are effective amounts of the active ingredients (the ones that are most likely to make a difference).

A high-quality joint supplement often contains the following ingredients that work together to support cartilage, maintain flexibility, and reduce everyday wear and tear:

Key ingredients to look for

Glucosamine helps maintain healthy cartilage, supporting the smooth movement and cushioning of joints. (Dr Scott Miller to suggest what sort of mg amounts to look out for – how can we differentiate from YuMove that tends to have less active ingredients despite the higher RRP and can we see any other benefits compared to competitors? Buddy and & Lola and Zesty Paws for example?) 400 – 1000 mg /day?

Chondroitin works alongside Glucosamine to protect cartilage and improve joint comfort. (Dr Scott Miller to suggest what sort of mg amounts to look out for – again how can we differentiate from YuMove that doesn’t have Chondroitin but says that green-lipped mussel includes natural Chrondroitin, Buddy and Lola also have less) 10-20 mg/kg/day?

Green-lipped Mussel is a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, known to support joint function and reduce inflammation. (Dr Scott Miller to suggest what sort of mg amounts to look out for) 20–49 mg/kg/day

Vitamin C and Vitamin E are antioxidants that help protect joint tissues from oxidative stress.

Manganese is an essential mineral for forming healthy connective tissue as well as supporting collagen formation in cartilage, tendons and ligaments. It’s also an important mineral for general joint health, growth and many other bodily functions.

When choosing a supplement, look for products that combine these ingredients in forms that are easy for pets to digest and absorb. Consistency is key, used regularly, these nutrients can help your pet move more freely, play longer, and stay active well into their golden years.

Safety first though, always remember...

  • Match the dose to your pet: Consider your pet’s weight, age, activity level, breed and joint health when choosing a supplement. Don’t just overdose “just in case”.
  • Look at “pertablet” or “perchew” information: Always check how much of each ingredient is in the actual product you’re considering, not just the ingredients list. Often savings can be found when you work out how much a day rather than how much a tablet as it’s about getting the right levels of active ingredient a day, if you need lots of tablets to do that it might cost you more in the long run!
  • Be consistent: Many joint supplements take weeks (6–12) before you’ll notice a difference.
  • Use a “loading phase” carefully: Some brands recommend doubling the dose for a few weeks, but only do this if advised by a vet.
  • Always talk with your vet before starting a new supplement: Especially if your pet is on other medications or has health

Final thoughts

Supporting joint health isn’t just about preventing problems, it’s about enhancing the everyday happiness of your pet. Because at the end of the day, happy joints mean happy pets, and happy pets mean more of the joy filled moments we all live for.
