Canine nutritionist Kristina Johansen shares her festive homemade Christmas cookie recipe for dogs, created with gentle ingredients including banana, oats and peanut butter.

The festive season is the perfect time to spoil your dog with a homemade treat, and these Christmas cookies offer a nourishing alternative to many shop-bought snacks.

Bananas provide natural fibre alongside potassium to help support normal digestive function. Oats and oat flour contribute slow-release energy and help maintain healthy bowel movements, while xylitol-free peanut butter adds flavour along with beneficial fats and essential nutrients.

Parsley completes the recipe as a natural source of antioxidants, helping to support your dog’s cells against everyday oxidative stress.

Ingredients

  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 2/3 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup dried parsley
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter (xylitol free)
  • 1 egg, beaten

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 160°C. Mash the banana in a bowl, then add the oat flour, rolled oats, parsley, peanut butter and beaten egg. Mix thoroughly and allow the mixture to rest for five minutes.
  2. Shape into around 24 small balls or cut into festive shapes. Place onto a lined baking tray and bake for 40–45 minutes until firm and golden on the underside.
  3. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

This recipe provides approximately 929 calories per batch, delivering a balanced combination of fats, protein and carbohydrates. Always feed treats in moderation as part of a complete diet.
